Open die-forging

Open-die forging is the deformation, in hot condition, between hammer and anvil, of a metal using a press or a hammer. The result obtained depends on the skill of the forgemaster. Open-die forging is an ancestral activity, traditionally associated with blacksmithing, horseshoeing, etc. It does not require precise tooling and is used to produce blanks and shaped parts. The process is called "open-die” because, during forging, the metal can deform in different directions, differently from the close die forging. In close die forging, the metal is deformed inside a closed volume called die.
The process works at a relatively low temperature, at a colour ranging from cherry red (fairly dark) to orange-yellow.
In our case, we talk about transformation of steels and copper special alloys.

 

 

Open-die forging is used for small series or single pieces.
In our case, the parts manufactured through this process are used in the power industry (turbine rotors; stators; transmission shafts; valve bodies; various elements used in the oil & gas), general mechanics (gears and gear boxes components; connectors; crankshafts).
For one of our partners, the materials range from structural steels to super-duplex, going through alloyed steels such as 42CrMo4 / 34CrNiMo6 / 4130 / F22 to stainless steels.
For another one of our partners, transformation involves copper alloys with high electrical conductivity and high corrosion resistance.
Weight can vary from roughly 100 Kg to 30 tons.
